Agadir travel guide

Agadir's golden beach stretches for more than ten kilometres along the Atlantic, backed by a lively seafront promenade lined with cafes and shops. The sand is wide and gentle, perfect for long walks, sunbathing and paddling at sunset. Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea and Spa sits right on the beach in the Bay of Palms, while The View Agadir and Sofitel Agadir Royal Bay Resort offer relaxed, comfortable resort stays close to the sea and sand.

Agadir offers a pleasing mix of seaside leisure and Moroccan character. Stroll the promenade, browse the shops around the marina, or lose an afternoon among the stalls of Souk El Had, one of the largest markets in the country with around six thousand small shops. Surfers head north to Taghazout, famed for its beaches and surf. Cafes along the bay suit sunset. After a busy day, return to The View Agadir for a relaxing evening.

The story of modern Agadir begins on 29 February 1960, when an earthquake nearly destroyed the city. It was rebuilt a short distance further south, giving it the wide boulevards and open feel you see today. High above the bay, the restored walls of the sixteenth century Kasbah remain, offering sweeping views over the port and the wide blue Atlantic. Many guests happily combine a visit with a stay at Sofitel Agadir Royal Bay Resort.

Beyond the resort beaches, Agadir is a gateway to striking Moroccan landscapes. About seventy kilometres to the south, Souss-Massa National Park protects coastal dunes, wetlands and rare birdlife. To the north-east, Paradise Valley winds through palm groves, rock pools and dramatic gorges, ideal for a day of gentle walking and swimming. Return to Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea and Spa, where a thalassotherapy institute helps tired legs recover and relax after a full day of exploring.
