Alila Manggis is a seaside resort in Manggis, on Bali's east coast. It sits in a coconut grove between the sea and Mount Agung, the island's most sacred mountain, and describes itself as secluded. The architecture is a contemporary take on traditional Balinese design. It suits you if you want a calm base for exploring East Bali. No star rating or standard board basis is published, although the advance purchase offer includes daily breakfast.
All 55 rooms and suites sit in two-storey thatched Balinese pavilions angled towards the beach, and many have a private balcony. Room types are Superior Garden View, Garden View, Deluxe Sea View and the Seaside Suite, which is the largest, with a large balcony and a bathtub. Rooms include a flat-screen TV, individual climate control and a minibar. The resort says all rooms face the ocean, yet it also lists garden view rooms, so check the view when you book.
The Alila Experience is planned with the Leisure Concierge team across five themes, including cultural learning, culinary arts and active spirits. Alila Moments include cycling to the Bali Aga village of Tenganan, a cooking session in the resort garden and a visit to the Goa Lawah bat cave temple. These are bookable at extra cost. Bicycles are available for personal use, and the resort runs a coral reef conservation programme with a local diving operation. Evening entertainment and a kids club are not published.
The resort has a swimming pool, and its advance purchase offer includes afternoon Hatha yoga, Tai Chi or a short massage by the pool on a weekly schedule. Spa Alila is open from 09:00 to 21:00, with treatments in open-air bales among pandan groves. Surya Shala is an open-air space by the sea for yoga and meditation. Pool dimensions, a gym and a kids club are not published.
There are two dining venues. SeaSalt serves Indonesian and Western dishes in a traditional pavilion on a lotus pond, with sea salt farmed at nearby Goa Lawah. Its Megibung is a shared meal served on a carved timber Dulang, and needs a reservation. Ocean Bar is a relaxed al fresco lounge beside the sea, serving cocktails and light bites. Both are listed as open from 13:00 to 21:00, although SeaSalt is also described as all-day dining, and room service is available.
The resort is 90 minutes by car from Ngurah Rai International Airport, and a shuttle runs to Candidasa and Tenganan on a daily schedule. Tenganan is close by and known for its double ikat Gringsing cloth. Further afield are Lempuyang Temple, home to the Gates of Heaven, and Besakih Temple, a complex of more than 20 temples on the slopes of Mount Agung. Climate details are not published.
