Alila Ubud is a hillside resort above the sacred Ayung River, 15 minutes from Ubud in central Bali. Jungle canopy surrounds it and the valley opens out below. The design blends contemporary style with traditional Balinese architecture, using open-air terraces, courtyards and gardens. It suits you if you want a quiet base with easy access to Ubud. No star rating or board basis is published, so check what your rate includes.
There are 56 rooms and 18 villas, laid out to resemble a Balinese village. Lower floor rooms have individual garden terraces, while higher floors have spacious balconies with jungle views. Room types are Guest Room, Deluxe Garden View Room and Hillside Superior. The villas are Valley Villa, Terrace Tree Villa, Pool Villa, Forest Edge Villa and Two Bedroom Pool Villa, which is the largest, with a private pool, outdoor tubs and a separate dining area. Its size is given as 240 sqm on one page and 190 sqm on another.
Alila Moments are bookable at extra cost and include a rice paddy walk with a Balinese farmer, silver crafting with an artisan, a Brahmin temple visit with a blessing, and a cycling trip through Ubud's countryside. Barong Dance Night, a traditional Balinese performance, runs every Monday from 19:00 to 21:00. A kids club and water sports are not published.
The 25-metre infinity pool has sunbeds and sits among the resort's greenery, so you can swim laps or simply lounge. Spa Alila is open from 09:00 to 21:00, with treatments shaped around a consultation, and its Rainforest Escape is given in an open-sided Bale Bengong facing the valley. Gym Alila has modern equipment, and the wellness pages describe sunrise yoga and meditation. A sauna and steam room are not published.
There are two places to eat and drink, plus room service. Plantation Restaurant is open from 07:00 to 23:00 and serves curated Asian dishes, from an Indonesian Rijstaffel to Thai Green Curry, using seasonal produce from local farmers and the organic garden. You dine in a Balinese wantilan-style pavilion with a view over the Ayung valley. Cabana Lounge is open from 10:00 to 23:00 and serves cocktails beside a terracotta brick feature wall.
Ubud is 15 minutes from the resort and has been the centre of Balinese arts and culture for more than a century. Museum Puri Lukisan, the island's oldest art museum, is there. Further out are the terraced rice fields of Tegalalang, the trek to the summit of Mount Batur and Goa Gajah, a 9th-century cave and UNESCO World Heritage Site. No airport transfer time, climate details or beach are published.
