Holidays to Golden Rock Inn, Nevis

Golden Rock Inn sits on the slopes of Nevis Peak, set within 100 acres of tropical gardens with views across the Caribbean Sea. The property occupies a restored former sugar estate dating from the 1800s and has just 11 rooms, giving it an intimate feel. Brightly painted cottages are linked by garden paths, while Green Vervet monkeys and local feral donkeys may be seen around the grounds. The hotel suits couples, families and travellers looking for privacy, nature and a quieter base on Nevis.

The 11 rooms include the two-storey Sugar Mill Suite, Paradise Cottage, Dar Garden Room and eight Hillside Rooms in four duplex cottages. The 19th-century Sugar Mill has an oversized king bed upstairs, two twin beds downstairs, two bathrooms, a sitting area, writing desk and sweeping views. Paradise Cottage is built from local volcanic stone and has a king bed, a full bathroom, a large terrace, and views toward Windward Beach. Dar has a queen bed, a full bathroom, and a screened porch opening onto a private garden. Hillside Rooms offer king, queen or twin beds, en suite bathrooms with walk-in rainfall showers and furnished terraces.

The island offers a broad range of outdoor activities, including windsurfing, kayaking, snorkelling, sailing, mountain biking, hiking and bird watching. Guided hikes can take you through the rainforest, up the 3,232-foot Nevis Peak or around the hotel gardens. The fact sheet does not confirm organised evening entertainment, so days are better shaped around outdoor exploration, the gardens and time by the pool.

You can spend time by the spring-fed freshwater swimming pool on the hotel grounds. The fact sheet does not list a spa, gym, sauna, steam room, fitness classes or named wellbeing treatments, so the emphasis here is on the natural setting and the slower pace of the gardens. More than 60 species of palms grow across the property, alongside cycads and other tropical planting.

Dining centres on The Rocks, where Caribbean cuisine is combined with global influences under chef James Eaton. Fresh fish and lobster are sourced from local fishermen, while tropical fruit and vegetables come from neighbouring growers. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served alfresco on sea-view dining decks or in garden settings. The bar sits beneath stone-vaulted ceilings and serves signature drinks including the Mount St. Helena and Golden Rock Rum Punch.

The hotel sits high on the eastern slope of Mount Nevis rather than directly on the beach, although the front desk can arrange transport to the beach. Across Nevis, you can explore historic ruins dating from the late 1600s, Charlestown and its colonial architecture, the Museum of Nevis History, the Bath Hotel, built in 1778, and the Botanical Garden of Nevis. The island is the smaller sister to St. Kitts and has a population of around 12,000.
